How to Build a Shed

How To Build A ShedHello and welcome to the beginning of a series of blogs where I will be taking you on a journey on how to build a shed right from the start.

You might be building a shed for the very first time and you want to get a better understanding of how to undertake such a project, or you might be in the middle of building a shed, but want some extra tips and hints to make your shed spectacular.

Well then this series will help you no matter what you want to achieve.

What I will be covering is siting and planning a shed, building shed foundations, building materials to use and common building practices when constructing a storage shed. It’s going to be fun, so I hope you enjoy the ride!

Most of us finally settle into a home that we are fully comfortable with. It has the number of bedrooms and bathrooms we want, but no matter how big it is, we always want or need extra storage space.

Attics and basements are fine to store extra clothing, furniture and Christmas decorations, but a separate outdoor building is the sensible solution to store gardening tools, lawn mowers, bicycles, camping gear, ladders, wood and so on.

So with this in mind it’s not a matter of just building a shed, the key is to build the right shed, and this takes a little thought and planning which will determine which size and style of shed will suit your household situation.

You begin by asking yourself, what are you specifically going to use the shed for?

The first thing to consider is how the shed will be used and what you want to store in it. It’s very easy to be tempted to just jump in and get some storage shed plans and start building your shed, or even purchasing one without thinking about the items to be stored.

This can only lead to a cluttered mess because you may construct a shed that’s too small for all the items you want to store. A shed should be a place that’s well organised and all the items in the shed should be easy to get to.
Now that you have considered what you want to store in it, you have determine the size of the shed. Sheds range from 2ft to 4ft all the way up to 16 ft. by 20 ft. or even bigger. The best way to work out what size shed you require is by asking yourself some simple questions:

•    How much space do I have in my back yard?
•    Are their size restrictions imposed by the local building department, zoning board or homeowners association?
•    How far from the property line must the shed be built ?
•    Will you be storing long items such as a ladder or lumber?
•    How much money do you have to put into the shed?

A really good tip is to make a list of all the items you want to store in the shed, then measure the largest items and that will determine what size shed you need to consider building.

Another thing to consider is just because you have the available space to build the shed, doesn’t mean you should build the largest shed possible. It has to fit in with  the look and feel of your house and you don’t want it overpowering your home and looking odd.

Another good tip is to look at building your shed to even number dimensions. Eg. 8 ft. by 10 ft., 10 ft by 12 ft. The reason for this is that common building materials such as lumber and plywood come in even numbered sizing. This will prevent you having to cut the materials to size and will reduce waste.

The next step is to contact your local building department and they will be able to tell you about the restrictions on the sheds minimum and maximum square footage as well as the maximum height. Also ask the building inspector for the documents you will need to apply for a building permit.

Now that you have taken careful consideration and thought into the size of your shed and what you want to store in it, in the next post we will look at different shed designs and how to decide on the one that suits your needs and style.

Large Shed PlansThere are a lot of plans out there to build standard sized sheds for your backyard, but perhaps you are looking for large shed plans because you not only want a shed, but you also want a place for your car or tractor.

When building a large shed, it’s best to have a concrete foundation for the floor, so whatever heavy items you will be storing, the floor can take the weight. Also a concrete floor will reduce rising damp and moisture coming into the shed.

I have found some very good quality shed plans at Shed-Plan.com. I suggest you go and check them out. The plans on this site are detailed and easy to follow.

Another great thing about this site is that if you know what size shed you are looking for, you can just purchase that one plan, so it’s very cost effective. They have very large shed plans from 16′x20′ to 20′x30′, and sizes in between.

What’s even better about these plans is that they come with the following:
* 2×4 wall constructions
* Roof plans
* Electrical Plan
* Open floor plan
* Door & window framing details
* Concrete foundations shown
* 70 Page construction manual

12 x 16 shed plansMost plans that you find on a website might not be the size you are looking for, and also a lot of the time the plans are all mixed up and it’s hard to find the one you want. Also the quality of the plans are usually pretty bad.

But I found a really good website that features the exact sized plan you are looking for. It’s called Shed-Plan.com. So if you are specifically looking for 12 x 16 shed plans, then they are available on this site.

I found the plans at Shed-Plan.com extremely good quality, and well worth the investment as they are reasonably priced, and very good quality. They are also easy to read and follow and are very detailed.

This site features 2 types of  12 x 16 shed plans, one is a gable style shed, and the other a barn style shed.

Gable sheds are extremely popular because they are most likely to fit in with the style of your house. Check out this post for more information on gable storage shed plans.

Barn sheds are really good because the roof of this style of shed provides extra space for storage. So if you are looking for extra storage space in a shed, this could be the design for you. To read more about barn style sheds, check out my post on barn shed plans.

Firewood Shed Plans

11.16.09

Posted by Storage Shed Plans in Storage Shed Plans |November 16th, 2009

Firewood Shed PlansIt’s coming up to that time of year again (depending on the area where you live), where the temperature drops and it starts to snow and get extremely cold.

So one of the best things to do before this weather hits, is to build a shed to store your firewood which will keep your firewood dry and ready to burn. There are different shed designs to choose from when it comes to storing firewood, you can check out these designs at the following blog post, firewood storage shed designs.

Deciding on which firewood shed plans to use to build your shed, will be determined depending on whether your firewood is damp prior to storage or your really need to protect your wood from the elements, or you need a shed that can dry the wood while it’s in storage. Depending on what your requirements are for your firewood shed, will determine the plans and design you choose.

Just a few tips on building a firewood shed:

1. Location of the firewood shed is important. It’s best to build it close to the back door of your home so it’s easy to get to. There would be nothing worse than having to walk through the cold icy snow to get your wood right at the back of your yard.

2. A firewood shed should have a raised floor to prevent the wood from getting damp.

3. A firewood shed roof needs to be slanted so the snow and rain runs off the roof away from the wood. Also it’s best if the ground the shed is built on also slants away from the wood, so the water doesn’t collect by the wood.

4. Airflow is important in a shed used to store firewood. this is so the wood dries properly. this is why most firewood sheds are built with 3 sides. One side is open to create airflow. Just make sure this open side faces away from where most of the wind occurs, to protect the wood from the elements.

When the cold strikes, you will be so glad you built that firewood shed, as you will be all nice and warm sitting by your warm fire listening to the cold wind outside.

Don’t delay in building your shed, as the cold weather is fast approaching. Check out My Shed Plans Elite for some great plans.

How To Build A Shed Loft

11.12.09

Posted by Storage Shed Plans in Storage Shed Plans |November 12th, 2009

How To Build A Shed LoftLooking for steps on how to build a shed loft ? Well I found these step by step instructions written by Michael Straessle on ehow.com.

Storage space has been an issue for homeowners for a long time. Many find that building a loft in a small shed is one way to add more room for storage. While this may be a simple project for the woodworking homeowner, care should be taken regarding the weight limits of the loft built. Explore the weight limits of 2-by-4s and 2-by-6s when they are stretched across the width of the shed.

Step 1:
Locate the studs in the walls in the area where the loft will be built. Measure and cut a piece of plywood the desired length of the loft. Be certain it is 8 inches wide.

Step 2:
Secure the plywood to the wall studs with the deck screws. Next, secure the 2-by-4 joist hangers to the plywood with the deck screws. Keep them within 12 to 16-inches of each other. (Use 2-by-6s if the shed is wider than 6 feet.)

Step 3:
Place the 2-by-4s into the joist hangers and secure them to the hangers with the deck screws. These become ceiling joists at this point. (Use 2-by-6s if the shed is wider than 6 feet.)

Step 4:
Measure out from the walls of the shed to the desired width of the storage area and make a mark. If using the entire width of the shed, divide the width by three and mark the joists accordingly.

Step 5:
Measure down from the rafters to the bottom of the ceiling joists and cut twice the number of joists used. These are for braces and will be used to strengthen the ceiling joists allowing for more weight.

Step 6:
Secure the braces to the rafters and the ceiling joists with the deck screws. Be certain the braces are plumb as this will give the maximum strength possible.

Step 7:
Measure and cut a piece of 3/4-inch plywood to fit on top of the ceiling joists in the desired storage area. Secure it to the ceiling joists with the deck screws.

Firewood Storage Shed Designs

11.11.09

Posted by Storage Shed Plans in Storage Shed Plans |November 11th, 2009

There are different firewood storage shed designs to choose from, but they all serve one main purpose, which is to keep firewood dry during winter. It is always best to let firewood dry out before stacking it, but if that’s not possible, then you can choose a design that allows the wood to dry while stacked.

Design 1: If your firewood is slightly wet before you stack it, you may want to consider this design. It’s the mono-pitch shed roof that keeps the rain off and allows a good airflow to help dry out the wood.

Design 2: If you need to protect your firewood from the elements, consider this design. This firewood shed keeps the firewood protected and the raised floor stops water from the ground getting the bottom part of the stack wet.

Design 3: If you like the Lean –to Look then consider this design. It has a clear plastic roof which allows the sun to penetrate and heat the wood which accelerates the seasoning, keeps the wood dry and also keeps the rain off.

Do It Yourself Storage Shed Plansdo it yourself storage shed plans are a great way to build a storage shed yourself. The benefits are huge, you can save money, find the exact shed design you like and also the satisfaction of creating something yourself is rewarding. There are also so many different styles of shed plans to choose from, from gambrel storage shed plans to gable storage shed plans. The possibilities are huge.

But just be aware that not all plans and blueprints are created equal. You can find shed plans in lots of places, free do it yourself storage shed plans on the internet, in a magazine or even free ones at a hardware store. But even though you may think you have found great plans, they usually aren’t the best. Magazines and the internet are a great place to get inspiration and ideas for your shed, but there isn’t a huge selection of designs you choose from and usually these plans are put together poorly. In some cases they are too simple and don’t provide you with enough detail to build the shed, or they are too complicated, which can put you off building your shed.

So if you want to find some great storage shed plans that suit what you are looking for, the best place to go is the internet to find a product that doesn’t just have a couple of shed plan designs, but literally thousands. This way you will really find what you are looking for.

When looking for quality shed plans make sure they have a material list, stock size, step by step instructions that are easy to follow, detailed illustrations, roof plans and rafter details, wall frame building instructions and also skid, joint outlay and stud placements.

Firewood Stack Plans

11.07.09

Posted by Storage Shed Plans in Storage Shed Plans |November 7th, 2009

Firewood Stack PlansDeciding to build your own firewood rack, stack or storage unit is a wise move because if you decided to buy one at your local store, you will notice they are expensive and quite small, so you are very limited by the choices available.

If you build your own firewood rack it will be less expensive and you can make it large, so it will be able to hold a full face cord of firewood. Also if you have space limitations, you can customize the rack to fit the desired space.

You will need good quality firewood stack plans to work from in order to build your rack, and some great plans can be found at My Shed Plans Elite.

Some of the important things to consider when building your firewood rack are:

Ensure the base is sturdy as this is the most crucial part of the rack.

With the amount of weight the firewood rack will be holding you need a set of strong end panels to keep it safe and secure.

Paint the rack with a good exterior paint.

Brad Smith
